Has OMF or AAF support been enabled or integrated?

Just wondering. This was one of the few things that prevented me from giving Ardour a true try.

Also, since I haven’t been on the forums in forever, I’m guessing that full MIDI support has been enabled, correct?

Um a quick search will answer this for you and you will learn that Ardour3 will have MIDI capabilities, but not until then.

It will also answer the stories for AAF and OMF, which are sadly a bit more complicated.

AAF import has been working for over two years. Unfortunately, politics prevented it from finding its way into Ardour2, which is why there’s been no further development work (my original plan was to add AAF export as well as support for OMF). A sponsored feature request was started in Mantis in the hope of resuming development work:-

In the meantime, if you’re only interested in importing from other DAW’s, you can find AAF import if you look in the right places (or if you’re prepared to build Ardour yourself, from source). For example the last I heard, you could obtain a version of Ardour (with AAF support) from 64studio’s repository. Or if you don’t mind spending some money, Linux users can obtain it by buying Indamixx (cheapest version $149). Mac users should soon be able to obtain it by buying Harrison’s Mixbus (currently around $80, but I think that’s an introductory price). In fact, Mixbus users could have had it from day one, except that we couldn’t find anyone to test it under OS-X… :frowning:

Finding out which DAW’s support AAF isn’t easy. The AAF Association’s web site gives great prominence to its financial sponsors but doesn’t seem to publicise products that offer AAF without supporting it financially. For example, Pyramix, Pro Tools and AudioFile all offer AAF compatibility (as indeed do most of the top end DAW’s) but none of them even gets a mention on the AAF Association’s web site… I’ll try to get a comprehensive list - but don’t hold your breath.

For me, the most important thing would be AAF import and export. OMF is nice to have, but AAF is taking over for OMF.

I absolutely understand that AAF implementation is not easy, but it is also very needed to be able to import a timeline from either Avid MediaComposer or Apple FinalCut Pro.

A company that has made a nice living in cleaning up transfers between these two editing systems is Automatic Duck. They know a lot more about AAF than most others. They are also proof that the AAF format is not easy to deal with…

Thanks for all the info, guys. I guess, only other question would be, which other DAW’s support Open XML, as I see this one of the exportable file session formats (not sure if there are others).

Specifically, I would love to know if Pro Tools and Logic support this format.

“Open XML” is not the name of a particular format, it’s a description of ardour’s own format. As far as I know, nothing other that ardour supports the ardour format. The developer of AATranslator is currently working on supporting it though.
