What flavor of OSX works

I am trying to put together a portable field recorder on a very limited budget. I was able to acquire a beige G3 for $5.00 and for some reason, which I have not been able to figure out yet, I can only load OSX 10.2 onto this beast. I have tried XPostFacto with OSX 10.3 and 10.4and when it tries to restart from the CD it crashes, and I have to reset the PRAM to get it to boot correctly

I would be willing to pay something for the software if I knew it would work with the G3 I have.

for the record (i talked to azphotog on IRC), Ardour will only run on OS X 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6. A new version to be released this week will run on 10.7 (Lion) as well.

surely it will run Linux?

the title of this forum thread is “what flavor of OS X works?” … yes, Ardour works on Linux too.

I think his point was that the G3 might run Linux and thus might allow for Ardour to run on it by putting Linux on it instead of OS X.

Its been some time since I played with Linux on PPC but yes, azphotog could install Debian (for example/ I’d recommend) and get Ardour running that way. G3’s are pretty long in the tooth now of course and I wouldn’t bother if you have any less than 512MB RAM - 1GB being a more sensible minimum but the more RAM the merrier of course. For serious work you’d really want at least 2GB but then I should hope you’re not expecting to do serious multitracking on a $5 G3
