Tempo and metronome setting by hitting on mouse button or tapping on keyboard

Hi,
I remember from back when I was using sonar 2 or 3 that you could set the tempo by tapping on a button it would detect what tempo you had by the time between the taps.
Its not a big feature but could save a bunch of time when finding the right tempo for a song instead of writing some number than playing back with metronome on. Hit or miss works, but this would be neat.

what do you guys think of this idea?

What would be the use ? the tempo value is dependent on “where you are” (what position in time) if the transport is stopped, how could there be a tempo ?

I mean if, while the user is numerically entering a tempo value for a new temp, the metronome could play the tempo as it was being adjusted (via increment/decrement arrows or whatever) to help you find the one that "sounds right"... does that make sense? Sorry if I'm not expressing it clearly. :)

Ok, I get your point

In the case of a fixed tempo it could be interesting. But it doesn’t solve the variable tempo need for wich tempo tapping and a good tempo automation track would be great.

I agree, at the momment, with its fixed tempo and bad tempo editor ardour will only be worth doing techno music when midi support comes in. Tempo “tap in” would be a way to humanise tempo management.

But as the devs told me on irc, there are limitations to what jack can offer in terms of handling tempo.

Could one of the devs post something here explaining the issue so the users needing these feature can go and discuss this with the jack people ? (sampo, are you there ?)

An easy-to-implement(?) way of providing at least some feedback for intuitive tempo setting would be to allow the metronome to sound at times other than while the transport is rolling, such as when the user is setting the tempo value, etc. Just a thought.

This could be a great addition for the idea I proposed at http://ardour.org/node/989

bumping this up. is there any plan to implement this? the current tempo setting workflow could really use to be improved. if i want to set the tempo i have to use an external metronome first to figure out the right tempo. otherwise i have to keep typing in new tempos using the process of "right click (a tiny arrow), edit, enter tempo, hit ok, press play, listen to the click, repeat. it would be great if you could set the tempo right on the main panel and hear the click as you do it. and even better if it was possible to set the click by tapping, as mentioned in this thread.

At least a quick way to change among predefined tempos ( combo box, buttons etc… )

Bumping the thread.

Hey, I agree with mthed. Current workflow of getting right tempo is totally inconvinient.

A simple Tap button that will allow us to tap the tempo with keyboard or mouse would be a GREAT improvement and a very simple thing to do. Can anyone help us out?

gtklick (a frontend to klick) is a linux program (available in the standard repos for ubuntu) that has a tap-tempo feature, and can be used as a timecode master for Ardour, thereby setting Ardour’s tempo by taptempo.

@unfa: feature requests go in mantis: http://tracker.ardour.org/ but i’m pretty sure that this one is already there.

@macinnsrr: i don’t think that ardour pays any attention to JACK tempo/meter information. it certainly will not change the timeline based on it.
