After various attempted configurations I solved this (for now at least) by re-enabling the motherboard audio via the Bios. My mobo is an Asus M4A785TD-M EVO. I found the right hw: position for my 1010LT card with aplay -l and I'm now able to ramp up to 96,000Hz without a hitch.
