The Editor shows the session by representing tracks as horizontal timeline displays, with material within the tracks (audio, MIDI, video, automation data, etc.) arranged along the horizontal (time) axis. More abstractly, the Editor represents the time based aspects of a session.

5.1.1.7 Shuttle Speed Control
Screenshot of panel ? Needs proofreading for accuracy.
The playback speed transport can be altered in a similar fashion to a tape machine. The transport can be shuttled or varisped using the shuttle speed controls.
Shuttle
To shuttle the transport, select Percentage mode from the pull down menu. Then click, hold and drag the shuttle bar right for forward, or left for rewind. The transport will move and the audio will playback at an altered speed, direction and pitch.
The status box will display the direction and speed of the transport as a percentage of the original playback speed.
When the shuttle speed controls are set to sprung the shuttle bar will automatically return to zero when the mouse button is released. The transport will automatically return to stop.
When the shuttle speed controls are set to wheel the shuttle bar will remain in position when the mouse button is released. The transport will continue to move and playback the audio at an altered speed, direction and pitch.
Varispeed
To varispeed the transport, select Semitone mode from the pull down menu. In this mode the transport will only move in the forward direction. Click, hold and drag the shuttle bar right for a higher pitch/faster playback, or left for a lower pitch/slower playback. The transport will begin to play and the audio will playback at an altered speed and pitch.
The status box will display the direction and varispeed of the transport in semitones.
When the shuttle speed controls are set to sprung the shuttle bar will automatically return to zero when the mouse button is released. The transport will continue to play, but at the normal speed and pitch.
When the shuttle speed controls are set to wheel the shuttle bar will remain in position when the mouse button is released. The transport will continue to move and playback the audio at an altered speed and pitch.

5.1.3.1 Punch In
This will activate the punch in marker, so that if a session is record enabled, and transport rolling, Ardour will only record after the punch in marker in time.
5.1.3.2 Punch Out
This will activate the punch out marker, so that if a session is record enabled, and transport is rolling, Ardour will only record up to the location of the punch out marker.
5.1.3.3 Auto Play
When enabled Ardour will automatically begin to play from the new location any time the playhead is moved in time.
You can use auto play only if your

5.1.3.5 Auto Input
This will allow Ardour to attempt to guess sensible settings for input monitoring. In general this means that you will only hear the input to a track if record is enabled on that track.
5.1.3.6 Click
This will activate Ardour's click output while transport is rolling, which will match the current tempo and meter settings as described in the Tempo/Meter timeline.
5.1.3.7 Solo
This button acts primarily as an indicator for Ardour's solo system. When a track or bus is solo'd, this button will flash red to indicate this status. This is true whether the track or bus is hidden or not. When this button is flashing you can press this button to release all currently solo'd tracks and busses. If you press this button when it is not flashing, it will solo all tracks that have content under the playhead.
This is especially useful if you hide a solo'd track, as you can press this button to then release the solo condition so you can hear your mix without having to unhide the track.
